Harui Akaogi was born in Tsukuba, Ibaraki, Japan in 1958. After graduating from Kyoto Saga University of Art, where she majored in Ceramic Art, she continued her studies and honed her ceramic making skills at pottery studio in Kasama, Ibaraki.

In 1982, she married Mr. Hiroshi Kikuchi, fellow ceramic artist, and established her own studio at its current location in Hitachiomiya  (former Gozenyama Village), which is still in operation to this day. By using her outstanding skills and an exceptional knowledge of pottery techniques, she creates life-related pieces such as Japanese teapots, teacups, flower vases, dinner plates and other such items on a daily basis.

Through continuous study, she has developed a mastery of traditional pottery techniques and always challenges herself to develop her own style, which is necessary to express her view of the world. She has an outstanding ability to shape striking and fascinating creations from the clay. She makes the most out of the nature of the clay, varying the strength of the fire, and other conditions within the kiln to express her own idea of the world.
